First-hand voyage review

Virgin Voyages Alaska Review: Brilliant Lady's Alaskan Glacier Blues & Coastal Views

I sailed from Seattle on Brilliant Lady from 30 July to 6 August 2026, visiting Ketchikan, Sitka, Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier, and Prince Rupert. This is my honest review of the scenery, wildlife, Shore Things, Central Sea Terrace cabin and the practical details UK Sailors should know.

My verdict

Was Virgin Voyages Alaska worth it?

Yes. I would sail Virgin Voyages in Alaska again. The wildlife, Inside Passage scenery and Endicott Arm were completely different from my Caribbean Virgin Voyages experiences. Sitka Wildlife Triple was the highlight, and a Sea Terrace proved especially valuable because I could watch whales and scenery directly from the balcony.

Best forAdults who want Alaska scenery with Virgin Voyages dining, entertainment and a relaxed onboard style.
May not suitSailors wanting warm-weather pool days or the same outdoor Scarlet Night atmosphere as the Caribbean.
Balcony verdictI strongly recommend a Sea Terrace if the budget allows.
Would I book again?Yes, ideally on a longer itinerary with more time in Seattle and fewer organised Shore Things.

Why this voyage

Why I chose Virgin Voyages for Alaska

I already knew the Virgin Voyages product well, but Alaska gave me a chance to experience it in a completely different setting. Instead of choosing each day around sunshine and the pool deck, this voyage was about landscapes, wildlife and watching the coastline change.

I also wanted practical first-hand knowledge for UK Sailors. Cabin choice, Seattle arrival timing, Shore Things and weather all matter more than they may appear when booking.

Day by day

My Virgin Voyages Alaska cruise review

29 July 2026

Flying from London and staying at Hotel Max

Our trip began at London Heathrow with a Virgin Atlantic flight to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. After landing, we waited more than an hour for our luggage, followed by roughly 45 minutes to pass immigration. Seattle accepted the CBP Mobile Passport Control app, and I found that using it helped make our immigration process quicker.

Hotel Max was around a ten-minute walk from Pike Place Market, making it easy to visit the original Starbucks area and the Gum Wall.

What I would do differently: Stay two nights in Seattle. The jet lag from London affected us more than usual.

Embarkation day on Brilliant Lady

We used a pre-booked transfer because the terminal was not practical to reach on foot and private transfers in Seattle were expensive. Boarding began at about 1.30pm and Deep Blue Extras gave us priority boarding.

We stayed in a Central Sea Terrace. For Alaska, I would not personally choose an inside cabin. There is too much wildlife and scenery outside.

Inside Passage sea day

Our first sea day was calm and scenic, with occasional fog horn sounds as the low cloud lifted. The outdoor heaters on Deck 15 aft were a useful surprise.

My tip: Keep binoculars and a camera close. Wildlife can appear without warning.

1 August 2026

Ketchikan, Alaska

Ketchikan was beautiful. We completed a Shore Thing and explored town afterwards, but Creek Street deserved more time.

What I would do differently: Explore independently or choose the in-town lumberjack experience rather than an excursion that took me away from town.

Sitka Wildlife Triple: my voyage highlight

The Sitka Wildlife Triple combined a wildlife cruise, raptor rehabilitation and a bear rescue centre. We were extraordinarily lucky: whales passed beneath the boat and surfaced on the other side.

My must-do recommendation: Prioritise this Shore Thing if wildlife matters, while remembering sightings are never guaranteed.

Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier

Tracy Arm was replaced by Endicott Arm because of landslide risks. Brilliant Lady sailed through steep scenery and floating ice until Dawes Glacier appeared ahead.

A smaller-boat Shore Thing travelled closer to the glacier. It sold out and cost around US$450 per Sailor on our voyage. Treat that as a historic reference, not a current price.

Prince Rupert, British Columbia

We took a short hiking Shore Thing. In hindsight, it did not feel like good value and meant we missed the town.

What I would do differently: Choose another activity or explore Prince Rupert independently.

Whales from our balcony

On the final sea day, whales jumped close enough for us to see and hear from our Sea Terrace. That moment summed up why I valued the balcony.

Disembarkation and returning to London

Everyone needed to leave by 10am. The terminal was busy, so we used a taxi downtown, stored our luggage with Bounce, had lunch and later travelled to the airport for our evening flight.

Wildlife sightings

What wildlife did I see?

These counts came from my voyage. Wildlife is never guaranteed.

17whales
11otters
9sea lions
6seals
5eagles
5bears
1waving otter

The closest whale encounters came on the Sitka wildlife cruise, while some of the most relaxed spotting happened from our Sea Terrace.

Shore Things reviewed

Which Virgin Voyages Alaska excursions were worth it?

My highlight

Sitka Wildlife Triple

The strongest Shore Thing of our voyage and my must-do wildlife recommendation.

Choose carefully

Ketchikan

Our excursion reduced the time available in a town I wanted to explore.

Not for me

Prince Rupert hike

I did not feel the short hike offered enough value.

Popular add-on

Dawes Glacier small boat

It sold out on our sailing, but we did not take it, so I cannot review it personally.

Ports and scenic cruising

My Alaska itinerary highlights

Seattle

Stay two nights if travelling from the UK.

Ketchikan

Allow time for Creek Street and the town.

Sitka

Prioritise the Wildlife Triple if wildlife is the goal.

Endicott Arm

Expect outstanding fjord and glacier scenery.

Prince Rupert

Choose activities carefully and leave time for town.

Cabin advice

Is a balcony worth it on Virgin Voyages Alaska?

I would strongly recommend a Sea Terrace if the budget allows. It gave us immediate access to whales, fjord views, glacier scenery and morning wildlife spotting.

Practical planning

Weather and packing advice

Our sailing was warmer than expected, while neighbouring departures experienced cooler and wetter conditions.

What surprised me

Small details that stood out

  • Warm embarkation weather
  • Whales from the balcony
  • The Inside Passage fog horn
  • Deck 15 aft heaters

Dining and entertainment

Reservations and Scarlet Night

Standby dining can work well, and The Galley is worth trying. Menus can change.

I did not enjoy Scarlet Night as much as on Caribbean itineraries because the indoor setting did not create the same pool-deck atmosphere.

An honest comparison

Virgin Voyages Alaska versus the Caribbean

Alaska

More scenery, wildlife and reasons to use a balcony.

Caribbean

Warmer outdoor life and stronger pool-deck energy.

Next-time notes

What I would do differently next time

Stay two nights in Seattle
Book fewer Shore Things
Spend more time in towns
Consider a longer itinerary

FAQs

Virgin Voyages Alaska review FAQs

Is Virgin Voyages good for Alaska?

Yes, particularly for adults who want Alaska scenery and wildlife alongside Virgin Voyages dining, entertainment and relaxed onboard style. I found Brilliant Lady worked well for the itinerary, although the experience felt different from a warm-weather Caribbean sailing.

Is a balcony worth it on Virgin Voyages Alaska?

Yes. I strongly recommend a Sea Terrace if the budget allows. We watched whales from the balcony and used it for scenic cruising, fjord views and morning wildlife spotting.

What wildlife did you see?

On my voyage I counted 17 whales, 11 otters, nine sea lions, six seals, five eagles, five bears and one memorable waving otter. Wildlife is never guaranteed.

Was Sitka Wildlife Triple worth it?

Yes. It was the highlight of my voyage. The full-day Shore Thing combined a wildlife cruise, raptor rehabilitation and a bear rescue centre, and we had remarkably close whale encounters.

How cold was Alaska?

Our sailing was warmer than expected, including a surprisingly warm embarkation day. Conditions vary significantly, and neighbouring sailings experienced rain and cooler weather.

What should I pack for Virgin Voyages Alaska?

Pack a waterproof jacket, layers, gloves, a beanie, comfortable footwear and binoculars. The weather can vary between the ship, the balcony, wildlife cruises and time ashore.

Should I stay in Seattle before the cruise?

Yes. I would stay for two nights if travelling from the UK. We stayed one night at Hotel Max, but the jet lag made me wish we had allowed another night.

Would you book this Alaska voyage again?

Yes. I would consider a longer itinerary, stay longer in Seattle and choose fewer Shore Things so I had more time to explore the port towns.

What was your favourite port?

Sitka produced my favourite day because of the Sitka Wildlife Triple. Ketchikan was the town where I most wished I had allowed more independent time.

What was your favourite excursion?

Sitka Wildlife Triple was my favourite excursion and my must-do recommendation from this voyage, although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.
